Space Band Project - Portland & Prague
The Space Band is a developing group of artists and non-artists,
musicians and non-musicians, assembled to perform found instruments
called lydes. Like Tibetan bells, these instruments are capable
of producing continuous ringing and mesmerizing tones. Unlike
Tibetan bells, the lydes are mobile, inexpensive and produce a
wide range of sound effects. When only a few are played together,
the ringing and percussive sounds have the effect of performing
space--that is, bringing out the unique acoustic and spatial characteristics
of an area, whether indoors or out. A large collection of lydes
has already been produced and a special notation invented. Both
are easy to learn--experience is not necessary! Rehearsals will
be fun and take place at Still Moving Studios, the artist's recording
studio, in Beaverton just off highway 26.
The Space Band will prepare for a performance at a First
Thursday Gallery Walk in downtown Portland. Eight unique downtown
sites will be determined with a special sound work planned for
each. Between these performance sites, the lydes will be played
continuously as they ring through the canyons of Portland's downtown.
A second project is scheduled to occur in Prague, The Czech Republic,
later this year. Portland's Space Band Project is supported
by a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
All ages are invited to participate.
