"Out of My Mind" was the first work that I wrote in the final year of my music degree at Keele and is an investigation of contrasting musical moods. Unpredictable swings from calm and relaxing to downright violent and impulsive make for exciting listening. Most of the sounds in "Out of My Mind" originated from a classical guitar. A variety of 'off the wall' (sometimes literally!) techniques were used to coax unusual sounds from my unfortunate instrument. These include bowing the strings with the serrated edge of a prepared coat hanger, taking a rusty screwdriver to the strings and bouncing the guitar off the edge of a piano. Hopefully the abuse was worth it to create some interesting and original sounds. Stuart Rimell is a 23 yr old masters student in Digital Music Technology at Keele university in England. Having studied electroacoustic composition for 3 years under Mike Vaughan and Rajmil Fischman he is now looking for a location to undertake a PhD in composition. Stuart is also a guitarist and has been writing music for about ten years. Achievements of note include an Honourary mention at the prestigious Bourge festival of electronic music in 1999.
