Kurt Schultz is a media artist/composer who is currently an Assistant Professor at Northern Illinois University's Time Arts Program, where he teaches animation, sound art and multimedia. Chaotic Notions is an attempt at unifying the sound and image creation process. Animated visual particles are combined with sound synthesized using a technique called granular synthesis, a method of building sounds by clumping minute slices of audio "grains". This visual and audio particle generation share similar controls, such as rate, density, chaos, duration, direction, etc. It is these common controls/metaphors and parameters that spark some of the processes in the artist's current work for performance and gallery installation environments. One goal is to develop some kind of coherent system where concurrent sound and visual events can make sense to the artist, where some kind of visual-music language can develop spontaneously and in real time. Hardware: NeXT workstation, Pentium 90, Personal Animation Recorder Software: cmix, rt, 3D Studio DOS, Razor Professional.
