4K Video and Stereo Sound by Dan Senn

Duration 6:15

Shuffling for Kiev” (2024) was made from two found objects: 1) the video track is from a green lidded glass jar filled with coins, keys, paper clips, airplane toothpaste, etc. and 2) the sound track msfr from an empty Czech beer can pulled from the recycle bin. Both were treated as instruments for improvisation—the videocamera like a percussion mallet rhythmically mapping and "tapping" the rotating jar contents; the aluminum can manipulated with my bare hands. Each performance was edited independently to create "standalone" works (Hear the solo sound track "Plechovka Piva") of about the same duration, this by chance, and then knittd together within a video editor. Also, by chance, the jar’s contents, taken as is, included two packs of stickies banded together that reminded me of the Ukrainian flagthus the titling.

The can still contained dribblings of stale beer wetting the recording table, this having a pleasant and unexpected effect. The two objects, one internally complex and ever shifting, the other externally complex with an internal varient, were compatible serendipitously.

There is no directed meaning in this work. The relationship between the jar with its cracked lid, it’s contents and the leaky beer can, are incidental even if they may arouse meaning in patrons. I like that. And yet I would not combine these unless they seem to worked well together. The two recordings were merged in the way I’ve described in my feax writing
