Jello Mold by Dan Senn
For Stereo/Quad Speakers
(Use earbuds, headphones or large system)

Total duration = 5'07"

Jello Mold (2026) was edited twice at Gasworks Studio in Prague, Czechia, recorded once in Studio FMEra in Watertown, Wisconsin, USA. The improvised file, 5'07" in duration, was recorded in early April 2026 using the objects in the banner photo above. Two weeks later, in Prague, this file was interpreted to create Stem 1 presented in the middle column. A week later, without referring to Stem 1, these materials were reinterpreted to create Stem 2. In other words, the same data was redundantly arranged, as if from scratch, with the purpose of creating sonic "twins", that is, "moveable stems" that may be presented variously in private or public performances as given in the right-most column here.

Moveable Stems - 2/4 Tracks

Stem 1, 5'07"

Stem 2, 5'07"

Either Stems standalone as stereophonic works. Stem 1 does not require Stem 2 to make compositional sense. Together, in whatever form (stereo or quadaphonic), they are independent while integrally linked, a paradox and concept that interests me. A way to test this is to click/listen (using earbuds) to Stem 1 and then start Stem 2, say, 7" later so both works are playing but out of sync. The resulting "sibling" artifact is remarkably complex.

Stereophonic Options (2 speakers)

1) Play Stem 1 or Stem 2 as solo stereophonic works — play sequentially, one after the other in any order, or separated by other works.
2) Play Stem 1  (or 2) and start Stem 2 (or 1) about 7 seconds later over stereo speakers.

Quadaphonic Options (4 speakers)

1) Play Stem 1 and Stem 2 exaclty in sync. This requires the use of software that enables presenting 4 tracks simultaneously over four speakers. Place Stem 1 in the front speakers, channel 1 = stage-left. Place Stem 2 in the rear speakers
,
 channel 1 = stage-left.

2) Play Stem 1 and 2 separated by, say, 7 seconds between start points in the same arrangment described in option 1 just above.
