I Have No Haughty Looks
is the second work in a collection of works titled Four Psalms Modal for a cappella choir. It is based on Psalm 131 as presented in the Book of Common Prayer used in the Episcopal and Anglican Church of America. The verse was first set in 1549 but new versions of the Book have
likely altered the original.

I Have No Haughty Looks
uses the Anglican
subtitle for the Psalm 131, "Domine, non est" as a refrain four times framing four sections
of the piece which I have translated to
mean, "Lord, I am not proud."

Psalm 131 is unusual in that it reflects a pensive
and self reflective sentiment anticipating modern interpretations of spiritual calm and groundedness.
Psalm 131
Domine, non est

1 O Lord, I am not proud;
I have no haughty looks.

2 I do not occupy myself with great
matters, or with things that are
too hard for me.

3 But I still my soul and make it quiet,
like a child upon its mother’s breast;
my soul is quieted within me.

4 O Israel, wait upon the Lord,
from this time forth for evermore.

I Have No Haughty Looks
is a modal piece written in the aolian and harmonic minor. A piano reduction is included for rehearsals, but the piece should
be sung a cappella.
With the divisi, eight voices are needed to perform this work.

I Have No Haughty Looks is written for and dedicated to my wife Caroline. It is the second
in a set of four works called
Four Psalms Modal based on three versions of the Psalms. The first is Bay Psalm 23, this work, the third is Make Haste To Deliver Me, and the fourth Bay Psalm 121.

Press play beneath the lyrics (left) to hear a December 2016 recording by the Kuhn Choir of Prague, Lenka Navrátilová, choirmaster.
