Jazz
2020
by Dan Senn
Impolitica
for Flute, Piano and 'Cello
duration 5-6 minutes

Jazz Impolitica was composed at Waterhouse Studio in Watertown, Wisconsin and completed on
February 2, 2020. It is for flute, piano and ‘cello
with a duration of 5-6 minutes.

The work evolved from the Raku Composition Program (RCP) developed by the composer in the 1980s at the Canberra School of Music in Australia and then at the University of Illinois, Urbana. This software was used to generate the macro structure of JI leaving the foreground decisions to the whim of the composer such as instrumentation, articulation, voice leading, metrics, phrasing, etc. The RCP was one of the first compositional software systems to generate a traditional score with midi output.

Jazz Impolitica was meant to be a quasi jazz composition using the RCP. As a student of Sal Martirano, bee-bop jazz was as ubiquitous at the U of I in the 1970s, as was the invention of  computer-based hardware and software musical systems. As an interdisciplinary artist closely aligned with the fluxus movement, Senn was strongly influenced by the visual art, dance and music of the 1970s by composers Martirano and Cage, filmmaker Phill Niblock, and visual artists Leonard Stach and Robert Rauschenberg.

Jazz Impolitica translates to “rude jazz” as it cuts its own jazzy course through the maze of data produced by the generating software.
