Vertical Lyre with Prague Bubbles (see and hear score) The Vertical Lyre (above) is a kinetic sculptural instrument with pine beaters (pendulums) set in motion by subaudio pulses received from speaker-pumps located beneath the instrument. The pendulums are balanced to effect rhythmic patterns and densities when striking adjacent pitch lines which are tuned and amplified by threaded piezo microphones. The instrument is controlled using a digital device containing pulse patterns while also playing back the sound of bathtub bubbles from my Prague apartment. All of this is heard within a stereo field, a kind of miniature proscenium defined by the left-right speaker-pumps and the instrument itself. |
