Video and Sound by Dan Senn

duration 10:30

Her Windows was filmed on December 26, 2020 in Watertown, Wisconsin. The video is in-camera edited with sound added soon after using a Too Flutter sculptural instrument, canning jars, and Watertown bricks fired just before the American Civi War.

The video was shot to imitate the eye movement of a child observing objects close up, in a safe place, and unobserved. The piece was made at the height of COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when one took special note of things while indoors. Five of the items are miniatures of sculptural instruments invented by Senn in 1988 (Too Lips). Other bits were unearthed while planting a vegetable garden—silver spoon, toy truck, bits of coal, clinkers or cinder from a 19th Century furnace or driveway. A chunk of petrified spruce 2000 years old found by the artist along the Oregon coast in 1967.

Parts of a broken alto recorder. A slice of brick left over from a recent house repair. A mummified orange that had rolled under a couch and the last jar of black cap jam cooked up by the artist's mother... Things beautiful and enriched by memories as brief as a sentence or two, others by a book length narrative.

The sounds for
Her Windows are indirectly connected with these objects. The background sonic curtain, the continuous rail-like sounds moving with the stereo field, are from the sound of cascading "moths", the main sound generator in Dan's fluttering instruments. The foreground sounds are from recordings by Dan of Watertown bricks being struck or scraped, and canning jars likewise performed.
