| From Nothing...
(2023) was filmed off a concrete wall next to a fire station in Holešovice on Argentinská in Prague on August
19, 2023. The footage is shaky, the photo conditions difficult,
traffic whizzing by… but I had noticed these subtle markings while
walking home from the nearby train station and wondered if I could make
a piece from them. Perhaps, just a short work that, again, were assisted by my I Ching interpretations in sound. My criteria for
film subjects at the time was “sequences of industrially generated objects/markings with
variations caused by usage and age. Object repetitiveness, OK. Or labor artifacts, the best incidental,
made by tradespeople”. |
When I saw these well worn marks, their source unknown to me, I wondered whether is was possible to lift them from obscurity, as if they could think and wanted this. To give them unexpected life, perhaps, in a small way, a useful metaphor as if I cared about such things. The resulting short work, From Nothing..., Raku like in approach and spirit, is paired with Lycon #12 and #16 from my 64 Interpretations of the I Ching, recordings made years earlier, me performing, encouraging, other unnoticed objects. Dan
Senn (Prague-Watertown) is an
intermedia artist working in music composition and production, kinetic
sound sculpture, experimental and documentary film. He has been a
professor of music and art in the United States and Australia and
travels internationally as a lecturer, performer and installation
artist. He lives in Prague where he directs the Echofluxx festivals,
and Watertown, Wisconsin, the USA. Dan's work moves freely between
expressive extremes and
languages depending upon the aesthetic joust at hand. Dan is cofounder
of Roulette
Intermedium in New York City, Cascadia Composers of
Portland Oregon, and the Echofluxx media
