Video and Stereo Sound (see sample video)*
Duration = 7:23

Free Range (2023) was filmed at High Meadows Farm near Johnson Creek, Wisconsin in the afternoon of March 8, 2023 and edited at Studio FMEra in nearby Watertown. The sound track was composed in January 2023 at Gasworks Studio in Holesovice, Prague, Czechia under the title of
Five Descents
, an otherwise stand alone stereo or quad electronic work. Free Range was made for the Seensound video and sound series in Melbourne, Australia held in late March 2023.

Soon after this work, the last experimental film shot with my trusty Sony HXR-NX70U, back in Prague at Gasworks, I created a sequence of 4K works including Danger Alley, Banana Telegraph, U Garáží. Then back again at Studio FMEra in the USA I made Three Panes, and Habitat. These works are closely related in construction and creative attitiude.
The provenance of this video began with the sound track composed using a clone of a Korg MS20 Synthesiser from the late 1970s. When nearly finished editing Five Descents in January 2023, I got the idea to videotape chickens and thus contacted friends who have had chickens in the past. This led me to Meg and High Meadow Farm.

Raised in a small Wisconsin city, Watertown, I spent acres of time on the farms of my Dad's brothers and sisters in the 1950s and 60s where chickens were common place. I grew up as much a f
arm kid as a city boy. The birds in this video are brown, not white, and much larger than those back in Rooster Valley on my Uncle Stan and Aunt Marilyn's farm in Southeastern Minnesota. But chickens are chickens and these fancy big hybrid chickens were as comfortable around me as I was with them. That I could still imitate their language didn't hurt either.DS
